When Actions Speak Louder

As the results of the 2016 election rolled over into the early morning of November 9th millions of Americans awoke to feel defeated, heartbroken, and terrified. Questions surrounding the health and safety of immigrants, of minorities, of the LGBTQ community, of a woman’s right to choose plagued the minds of people who have called the United States their home. Parents agonized over how to explain to their children how a man like Donald Trump, and his flawed sense of right and wrong, could be elected the next President of the United States.

However, as an American, as a voter who believed in Secretary Hillary Rodham Clinton, as a proud feminist, I knew that millions of others like me create a strong group of people who do not tire and who peacefully fight for what is right. And not just what is right for themselves or a select group of elites, but what is right for all.

We should all take the appropriate time needed to grieve, then we must all band together, and use the rightful power our Democracy and country give us. Hillary humbly shared many empowering sentiments during her concession speech. Let’s not forget what she asked us to do. She said, “so my friends, let us have faith in each other, let us not grow weary, let us not lose heart, for there are more seasons to come. And there is more work to do.”

Our hate for the results of this election or this man will turn into the energy this country needs. The people protesting Donald Trump’s victory are not hateful people, we are loving people, we are optimistic, we are the future of this country. Love may not be the apparent ruling force in our government. Politicians don’t often cite love as their reason for proposing laws, but as citizens looking beyond their own self-interest, we cite love often. Love is what brings us together and what energizes us to fight for social rights. We need to all remember that love is powerful, and love will always and forever trump hate.
